B. S. Yediyurappa or Bookanakere Siddalingappa Yediyurappa, popularly known as BSY, is a protuberant Indian politician and a senior leader of Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP). He served as the 19th Chief Minister of Karnataka and is an MLA from Shikaripura constituency in Shimoga district, from where he has won eight times. He is the only leader in Karnataka so far to have served four time’s as the Chief Minister and three times as the Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.

BSY played a key role in expanding the footprints of the party in the South. Born on February 27, 1943, in Karnataka’s Mandya district, he is the son of Siddalingappa and Puttathayamma. A graduate in Bachelor of Arts(BA) from Bangalore University, he worked as a first-division clerk in the social welfare department. He married Mythradevi in 1967 and has five children.

BSY joined RSS during his college days and became the Chief Minister of Karnataka for the first time in November 2007 but had to resign as BJP’s truce with the JD(S) collapsed over ministries.

He led BJP to a historic win in the state and again became the CM in 2008, a first for the BJP in southern India. However, he stepped down from the post of CM in 2011 after the alleged corruption charges and resigned from the BJP. He formed his own political party ‘Karnataka Janata Paksha’ in 2012 but again joined BJP in 2013.

B. S. Yediyurappa: Birth, Early Life and Education

Named after the ruling deity of a Shaivite temple built by the excessive saint Siddalingeshwara at Yediyur in Tumkuru district, B. S. Yediyurappa was born on 27 February 1943 in Mandya district’s Bookanakere village in British India to Siddalingappa and Puttathayamma.

Yediyurappa completed his pre-university education from Government college, Mandya (Mysore University) during 1960–61. His highest educational qualification is B.A.

In 1965, he was selected as a first-division clerk in the social welfare division but quit to join as a clerk at Veerabhadra Shastri’s Shankara rice mill in Shikaripura.

Married Life and Children

Yediyurappa is an ardent follower of Basavanna. In 1967, he married the daughter of the rice mill owner, Mythradevi. The couple gave birth to two sons (B.Y. Raghavendra, B.Y. Vijayendra) and three daughter’s Arunadevi, Padmavati and Umadevi. In 2004, Mythradevi died after falling into a sump while drawing water.

1972: Appointed as a member of the Shikaripura Town Municipality.

1975: Elected as the President of the Taluk unit of the Jana Sangh and appointed as the President of the Town Municipality of Shikaripura.

1980: Elected as the President of the Shikaripura unit of the BJP.

1985: Became the President of BJP’s Shivamogga unit.

1988: Elected as the President of the Karnataka BJP.

1994: Became the leader of opposition of Karnataka Legislative’s assembly.

1999: Lost the elections.

2004: Re-elected and became the leader of opposition again.

2018: Took oath as the Karnataka CM, but had to resign just after 2 days as he lost the trust vote.

2019: Became the Chief Minister of Karnataka on 26 July 2019.

2021: On 26 July, he annopunced his acquiescence as the Chief Minister of Karnataka.
